THE VILLAGES OF BRENZONE

15 small historical villages are part of the municipality of Brenzone.
15 ancient settlements to explore and discover. Some are now abandoned, nevertheless, all are rich in history, culture and tradition.

The municipality of Brenzone consists of several small villages. Some of these, such as Assenza, Magugnano, Porto, Marniga, Castelletto and Pai, are located directly on the shores of Lake Garda. The other villages, however, are in a romantic location on the slopes of the mountain, such as Sommavilla, Castello, Prada or Crero. Although the hihg-traffic “Gardesana” road runs through these villages, they have retained the charm of their fisher and farmer past, which you still can feel in their narrow and quiet streets.
Assenza is the northernmost of the hamlets/districts of Brenzone. The church of St. Nicholas has beautiful frescoes from the 14th century. Some paths start right next to the church: one of them leads to the Telegrafo Refuge, situated at an altitude of 2147 m (~ 7.000 ft). In Magugnano, in the town hall, a 4.000 year old stone whose engraved symbols have not yet been deciphered is on exposition.

The largest hamlet of Brenzone, Castelletto, with its picturesque harbour and sleepy old town is definitely worth visiting. Many of the houses date back to the 16th century and the Romanesque church of San Zeno dating back to the 11th – 12th century is one of the oldest in the region.
Trimelone is a small island facing Assenza. The island was fortified in the 10th century, unfortunately with no remains of the time, as it was re-fortified during the First World War and afterwards used as an armoury, storing ammunition from the two world wars.
Cassone is a typical small village that has kept its original charm intact.
